In spite of the Breitling’s success over the past few years- they are the fourth largest brand in the U.S. in terms of the sales volume – they’ve often been the target of criticism from the replica watch enthusiasts, mainly aimed at their “busy” dials, their gargantuan sizes, and their bright cases. It seems as though new Breitling CEO Georges Kern has been listening. Actually, at a press conference in New York last week, Kern acknowledged that he’s taking this feedback seriously and is in the early stages of overhauling the brand. He was in New York to launch the first new watches under his reign, and to discuss his plans for fake Breitling this year and beyond.
Our first glimpse into the “new” Breitling is the Navitimer 8 collection, launched with much fanfare several weeks ago, as part of a worldwide road show. I had the opportunity to get my hands on the collection for a while last week, typically that Navitimer 8 B01 Chronograph and came away with some distinct impressions.
We can see from the name that the watches, of the Navitimer 8 line, was the aviation board instrument clocks of the 1930s and ’40s, which were called “Breitling 8” for their eight-day movements. Contrary to common belief, the Navitimer name was applied on more watches than just the famous slide rule chronograph and the new family of watches reflects the new paradigm Kern is imposing.
This dial design, while appearing perhaps a little generic, is actually fairly true to the dials of those cheap replica breitling 8 board instruments, right down to the font used for the numerals, the triangles and small ticks on the minute track that extend into the dial, and the five-minute numerals between the hour markers and the track.
The 316L steel, rose gold, or DLC “Blacksteel” cases of the new chronograph are 43mm in diameter, downright restrained compared to the fake Breitlings of the recent past, made even more wearable by fairly short curved-down lugs.
The replica watches I got to handle were all samples, with fixed bezels and blocked movements, therefore, I couldn’t get a sense of the bezel or chronograph actions. I think the overarching impression with which I am left regarding the Navitimer 8 is one of a clean, inoffensive, well-sized sports chronograph that is an interesting first effort at a brand reboot. Georges Kern has been in his CEO seat at Breitling for less than a year, so this was perhaps a safe first salvo. If it is an indication of where he intends to take the company, design-wise, it should be an interesting next couple of years.
